I was quite disappointed after reading the YU Beacon article.
I am not against free speech.
I am against poor pointless writing.
The Curious Jew put it well here.
Something that bothered me about the article which was not touched upon by the Curious Jew was that
1) The author was anonymous.
COME ON! Writing something like that without telling us who you are. Seriously!
2) Why did she feel a need to change her identity?
It's not like frum people don't engage in mating acts.
You and I were born somehow after all, weren't we.
And even sinning. People sin. That doesn't mean you have to change your persona and move to another country every time you do so.
The author implies that she could not have had relations had she remained in her "cute" frum attire.
3) Come on. That relationship was a bad one if not abusive.
Poor girl. Had to get herself drunk to let it happen.
The guy got what he wanted and ran for the hills.
She was left alone with all her raw emotional dilemmas and wasn't offered any emotional support.
THERAPY 101! Help!

ReplyDeleteSo it's not intended to be a master piece. It's like judging a hammer to a fork... both are tools, but if you start comparing how they cut food, you get bad results.
I was debating whether to write about this. I think it was badly written and had no point. I'm not really sure what she was trying to convey. There are many other ways for her to give over the message of having to deal with a religious dichotomy (if that was even her goal).

p.s. I also commend Stern's Student Council for their decision. I'm not sure if you read their letter of explanation but it was really well written!

ReplyDeleteWhen people say "Oh, it's freedom of speech." It's not freedom of speech if you're ANONYMOUS. It seems to me that this was made up to get YU all hitzed up. Then they can claim they are providing a service, one that I cannot understand.
ReplyDeleteGentile girls do this all the time - they think they are getting a man to commit, he just sees it as some fun. He moves on. She's in pieces. Oldest story in the book. Booooring.
By not ok-ing premarital relations we are saying that girls are worth more than that, they don't have to sell themselves so cheap, that they should be in deep, meaningful commitment first.
This article wasn't educating or informing. It was just putting a girl back in her pre-feminist place.
I actually know the author. I think many people know whom it is. But im not sure its so relevant to the nature of the article.
