I broke up with Mr. 4 months. It was sudden and out of the blue.
I returned to my apartment sobbing loudly.
My roommate gave me a hug and when I calmed down a bit and caught my breath,
she told me: "I am kind of happy you broke up, because I was nervous you would get engaged before me."
I stared. "YOU DID NOT JUST SAY THAT." Was my thought process. But she did. She said it like it was.
Because I ended it after four months with a guy who couldn't commit, and she was dating a guy for two years still hoping he would propose someday.
I felt like telling her: "If you keep on dating the guy you are dating now, I will still get engaged before you!"

With roommates like that, who needs enemies?

DeleteI concur. It sounds like some daters need to attend some remedial middos courses.
ReplyDeleteThat's horrible.
ReplyDeleteWhat an honest roommate. Good for you!
ReplyDeleteif I were you, I'd dump the roommate as well... people who make comments like that are just transferring their negativity and self-doubts onto you. From your blog you sound awesome -- don't let insecure girls like that weight down on you.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with all the criticism-we all (that is, single pple) feel a mixture of sadness and guilty relief when our friends end relationships, but also when they get engaged.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of the latter, it's not chas v'shalom because we don't want them to get engaged bichlal, we just don't want them to leave us behind as they move on.
I'm glad you have such an open and honest relationship with your roommate, though her timing could have been a *leeeeetle* more sensitive.
And I hope she dumps two year guy soon, before he eats up more of her life in vain!
Does your roommate follow your blog? I'm sure this is a painful subject for her and your writing here for the world might not make it any better (not that her comment wasnt insensitive, absurd, etc)
